Basic Rules of Biking in the Netherlands
What are the cycling rules?
In the Netherlands, cyclists must follow specific rules to ensure safety and harmony on the roads.
- Keep right → Always cycle on the right side of the bike path or road.
- Use bike lanes → If there’s a designated bike lane, you must use it.
- Signal with your hand → Extend your arm left or right to show where you’re turning.
- Don’t use your phone → It’s illegal to hold a phone while cycling (hands-free is allowed).
- Lights at night → Front (white/yellow) and back (red) lights are mandatory when it’s dark.
- No passengers → Only one person per bike, unless it’s specially designed for more.
- Follow traffic lights & signs → Cyclists must obey all traffic signals and rules.
- Yield to pedestrians → Especially at crossings and in shared spaces.
- Park responsibly → Use bike racks and avoid blocking sidewalks, entrances, or streets. Always lock your bike when parked!
- Shark Teeth → Always stop when you see the triangle ‘shark teeth’ markings pointing at you. They mean you must give way to other traffic.
- Be alert → Watch out for trams, cars, and other cyclists—Dutch traffic can be busy!
Do I need to wear a helmet?
While wearing a helmet is not mandatory for adults, it is highly recommended for safety. Children under 12 are required to wear one. Stay safe and enjoy your ride!Bike Accessories
