Workshop: From written pages to sustainable vases



On 22 October 2025, The Florian Hotel hosted a creative and inspiring evening with Diana Gorter, a former mathematician turned visual artist. Diana is renowned for her vibrant, mosaic-style artworks crafted from everyday discarded objects, inviting viewers to uncover beauty and meaning in the overlooked. Our hotel proudly shares Diana’s vision of sustainability, creativity, and conscious design, making it the perfect setting for this unique workshop.

During this hands-on workshop, locals and hotel guests learned how to craft their own paper vase models using pages from old books, giving forgotten stories a beautiful second life. After shaping the vases, participants decorated them with dried flowers, with all materials thoughtfully provided by us.

Guests enjoyed a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere, complemented by refreshing mocktails and tasty bites such as Amsterdam old cheese and nuts—a perfect setting for creativity and connection.

Special Feature: Sustainability Talk by NMCX

We were delighted to welcome the NMCX Center for Sustainability, who joined the evening for a short and insightful talk. They shared practical tips for residents of Hoofddorp on smart waste disposal and highlighted the importance of the 3 R’s: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, along with simple actions anyone can take toward a more sustainable lifestyle.

What’s Next: The Swap Rail at The Florian Hotel



This workshop sparked new sustainable ideas for our hotel, and we’re especially excited about one of NMCX’s initiatives: the Swap Rail.
The concept is simple but powerful—reduce textile waste by giving clothes a second life. Leave something behind and take something new with you.

We’re thrilled to bring this idea to life at The Florian Hotel. You can now find the Swap Rail in our common area. Let’s make sustainability stylish, social, and fun.

When visiting The Florian, you can also spot two of her nicest artwork prints in our Hall of Fame and near our reception: her unique mosaic-style portraits of Van Gogh and The Girl with the Pearl Earring.
